Hot Seat: Spoken Word (Re)Generations w/Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai, Kevin Coval, and avery young

1385546_10151974506293689_1438220576_n

Drawing from their shared roots in Chicago’s rich multicultural spoken word scene, slam poets Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai, Kevin Coval, and avery young will share from new original works that contemplate culture, race, and identity.

After each performance, each artist will be in the “hot seat,” responding to a series of questions from the other two artists. Together, they’ll explore what it means to evolve as spoken word artists and how their work impacts and is impacted by Chicago’s changing cultural landscape over the last decade.

Youth poets from Young Chicago Authors will open the show and a reception will follow.

Linsanity Private Screening and Discussion
4:30 – 6:30 PM
AMC River East

Linsanity is the inspirational story of a humble athlete who succeeds in the NBA against all odds and expectations. A state high school champion, all-Ivy at Harvard, but overlooked and undrafted by the NBA, Jeremy Lin beat the odds to become an unlikely national sensation and one of the biggest stories in sports history. The movie played to an overwhelmingly positive reception at the Sundance Film Festival and SXSW this year

TAP-Chicago, JAConnect, and JACL in collaboration with the Harvard Club, FAN, KACC, Harvardwood, TIPS, AAJA, AIRMW, and NU-A5 are proud to present an opening weekend private screening of Linsanity: The Movie. The screening will be followed by Q&A and discussion with the producer of Linsanity, Brian Yang.

The film documents Jeremy’s life for several years, capturing never-before-seen footage of him at the highest and lowest points in his basketball career.

The movie will be shown in a few cities opening weekend and if it does well, AMC will keep it and expand it. If it doesn’t, it will be pulled. Our screening will contribute towards the national box office and help make it possible for others to experience Linsanity! This event is made possible by financial support from GFCBW-Chicago.

Large Double Ten Day parades o ccur annually all over Taiwan and in the Chinatowns of San Francisco and Chicago.

Seeking Asian Female Movie Screening

SAF_MainStill_bySusanMunroe

Join TAP-Chicago for 2 movies during the 18th Annual Asian American Showcase! Seeking Asian Female is a documentary by Chinese American filmmaker Debbie Lum about Steven and Sandy—an aging white man with “yellow fever” who is obsessed with marrying any Asian woman, and the young Chinese bride he finds online.

“masterful meta-narrative… hilarious, unsettling, heartfelt and just plain icky all at the same time”
-Nicole Wong, Hyphen Magazine

“Brings stereotypes of ‘yellow fever’ and ‘gold-digging immigrant’ into compelling interplay.”
-Maggie Lee, Variety

After online flirtations, Steven, a giddily obsessed 60-year-old, leaps into matrimony with Sandy, a 30-year-old from Anhui province, China. Sandy appears sincerely drawn to Steven despite his age and lack of means. The bilingual filmmaker is soon thrust into the role of reluctant marriage counselor when lines of communication break down. Global migration, Sino-American relations and the perennial battle of the sexes, weigh in on the fate of their marriage in this intensely captivating personal documentary.

Movie starts at 6:15 PM, the group will meet at the theatre at 5:45 PM (there is a bar and snacks available for purchase). If there is interest, we will grab drinks and food at a nearby bar afterward.

Tickets are available through TicketMaster or in person at the Gene Siskel Center box office (with no surcharge). $11 general admission, $7 students, $6 Film Center members
http://www.ticketmaster.com/Seeking-Asian-Female-tickets/artist/1858118

“Debbie Lum’s seeking asian female, which premiered at SXSW, is an absolutely extraordinary documentary. This film is a transformative work that chronicles men’s lust for and obsession with Asian women, often known as ‘yellow fever.’”
Rachel Blank, Austin Indie Film Examiner
