Formosa featuring Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai
Free and open to the public, but seats are limited. TAP-Chicago has a reserved section and will travel to the event together from downtown Chicago!
From the artist:
“it should definitely be a very thought-provoking evening that explores a lot of different histories in Taiwan (the colonial history of the Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch) as well as the history of Barbie doll manufacturing in Taishan – in a fun, and ah hem, rather scandalous way at certain points.
Basically, it’s a solo show, where I perform four different characters (a Spanish sailor from the 1600’s in Tamshui, a Nicki Minaj copycat Asian Am. female hip hop mc, an 8 year old Chinese adoptee girl in Manhattan, and a worker in the Barbie doll factory in Taishan during the 1960’s-1980’s) exploring different issues around race, culture, identity, and beauty, so it’s funny, it’s crazy, it’s emotional – and has been a great conversation starter.”
Reserve your seat in the TAP-Chicago section (free):
https://www.wepay.com/
More about the show:
http://www.prairie.org/
Getting There: Meet at 6 PM SHARP at the ground floor lobby of Millennium Park Plaza, 155 N Michigan Ave (there is short term parking behind the building on Stetson). We will then carpool to the event together or if necessary take the Metra.
KELLY ZEN-YIE TSAI is a Chicago-born, Brooklyn-based spoken word poet who has been featured at over 500 venues worldwide including the White House, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Apollo Theater in Harlem, and three seasons of Russell Simmons’ HBO Def Poetry. Tsai has been profiled on Idealist.org in NYC’s Top 40 New Yorkers Who Make Positive Social Change, AngryAsianMan.com’s 30 Most Influential Asian Americans Under 30, and HBO’s East of Main Street: Asians Aloud.
Movie “Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale”
Come join TAP-Chicago and TJCCC for a joint viewing of the Taiwanese hit movie “Seediq Bale” at 8:10 pm on Friday, May 11th at the AMC River East 21!
TJCCC has graciously purchased 50 discounted tickets. They will be available to TAP-Chicago and TJCCC members for only $8.00, first come, first serve in the lobby starting at 7:30 pm! Additionally, we will have promotional posters and prizes for those first 50 attendees.
Also, please note the movie is currently scheduled for a limited run from 5/11 to 5/15 unless we show our support with strong ticket sales! So even if you can’t make it to our viewing, please see it on your own.
Your support is very important. This is the first time we were able to bring a Taiwanese made film to the mainstream theaters. This weekend the box office will determine if the movie will stay in the theater for another week or two.
