Living Our Culture: Bringing Legacy to Life

10355704_10100934144309135_6187738553716389555_o

Join TAP-Chicago in supporting our community partner Japanese American Service Committee (JASC) as they honor and explore living culture during their big annual fundraising & networking event.

Event includes complimentary beer, wine and sake and heavy appetizers from Kamehachi. Enjoy music by Tatsu Aoki while you mingle and bid on many silent auction items.

The 2014 event features the theme of “Bringing Legacy to Life”. Everyone has a story worth telling. Each of us passes on our life stories to future generations: the essence of who you are, what maters to you, what you’ve learned, what you deeply value and your hops and dreams for the future. This becomes your legacy.

Likewise, every community has a legacy. We have assembled an extraordinary group of artists, athletes, activists, teachers and leaders who will share their life’s work with you, exemplifying our theme of creating a “living culture.” These special people live the values we cherish through their actions every day. They have taken the gift of knowledge and traditions learned in previous generations and figured out how to make the most of it in their own way.

Please join us in meeting the honorees:

– Tatsu Aoki, musician & filmmaker, lives his legacy through Hyougenryoku (creative expression).
– Alice Murata of Heiwa Terrace and Michael Takada of JASC live their legacy through Kazoku to Komyunitei (family and community).
– Enoch Kanaya and James Kolly Takaki, WWII 442nd veterans, and Col. Robert Hashimoto, USMC, live their legacy throughChuuseishin (loyalty).
– Doug Tono, Tohkon Judo Academy, and Dwight Sora, Chicago Aikido Club, live their legacy throughKokoro to karada no tsunagari (connection of body and mind).
– Michio Iwao, Nisei wood carver, lives his legacy through Shousai ni chuui suru (attention to detail).
– Laura Kina, artist & professor, lives her legacy through exploration of Jiko-ninshiki (identity).

We welcome you to join us in connecting with Chicago’s Japanese American community and take a journey to be inspired to explore your own living legacy. What is your legacy? And how do you bring it to life?
