ABOUT THE FILM

In OFF THE MENU (2015, USA, 60 min), Grace Lee travels across the U.S. to explore the important role food plays in Asian American communities. From Houston, Texas to New York’s Lower East Side, from Oak Creek, Wisconsin to Oahu, Hawaii, Lee seeks stories that reflect an evolving Asian America. The focus on food serves as a way to explore the deeper connections of culture, family, and ideas of authenticity and adaptation that link all Asian Americans. The film takes us on a cultural journey with thoughtful observations of how traditions around the preparation, sharing and creation of meals bring people and communities together. Lee samples the warm hospitality of a Wisconsin Sikh temple’s feast, checks out the empire of a self-made Texan “sushi king,” and the innovations of a young Manhattan fusion chef. In doing so, she proves the way to the heart of any Asian American community is definitely through its stomach!

9-Man Film Screening w/Director

9Man_3-770x433

Join TAP-Chicago for a screening of the film 9-MAN on the closing night of the Asian American Showcase! A special discussion with the film’s director follows the screening. TAP-Chicago has access to a limited number of discounted group tickets at $8 vs. $11 regular price!

Purchase your ticket at http://9man.eventbrite.com/

ABOUT THE FILM

9-MAN is the story of a gritty Chinese-only street-ball game born in the alleys and parking lots of local 1930s Chinatowns. Director Ursula Liang follows 9-man’s rising stars and chronicles the rich history and evolution of the sport as rival teams battle to cement their place in history.

Once a year, Labor Day weekend marks the culmination of a summer’s worth of early mornings, late nights and hours of practice. It’s where for some, a local playground is remembered as a benchmark in history and for others, a place that must be forgotten. It’s where bitter rivals will battle by day only to become better friends by night. And it’s where one team will eventually find glory and etch its place in the 80-year history of the game. For many Chinese American athletes, Labor Day is dedicated to one thing and one thing only: 9-man.

9-MAN follows the history of the game, from the discrimination that many Chinese American immigrants faced in the 1930s to the physical and emotional battles that take place on the courts. Pivoting between the action on the parking lots and the late-night parties, the film captures the spirit of nine-man, as the players not only battle for a championship, but fight to preserve the sport they love.

The Hundred Flowers Project Theater Outing

150096_10154776706135298_4990733021718668951_n

Come with TAP-Chicago on November 22nd to see one of the last performances of The Hundred Flowers Project!

THE PLAY
Digital media becomes the perfect “ally” for a group of actors collectively creating a play about Mao Tse Tung’s Cultural Revolution. As their work-in-progress starts morphing into a propaganda play about the play itself, disturbing questions arise as to who, or what, is controlling the narrative.

Statement from Playwright Christopher Chen:
The Hundred Flowers Project is my big, multimedia fantasia on the Cultural Revolution in China. With heavy use of modern technology, the piece explores the state of mind of Mao’s regime by melding it with our own Facebook age, ultimately finding a shared, crazed selfmythologizing ethos in both. To really capture the vertiginous, careening, propagandic feel of the Cultural Revolution, I decided to make this a visceral piece of theater with all cylinders firing, embracing spectacle and a kaleidoscopic, continuously shifting structure. I love plays that take audiences on an emotional and intellectual roller coaster, plays that disorient and startle as a means of opening up hidden levels of insight.

Reviews:
”“Flowers” revels in a mixed-media meta-theatricality that unfolds its unexpected twists with sharp clarity.”
– Robert Hurwitt, San Francisco Chronicle, October 30, 2012

“Chen’s vision — linking the power of Mao’s reign with Facebook’s dominance — is at once hilariously satirical and ominous.”
– Jean Schiffman, San Francisco Examiner, November 1, 2012

“Chen’s new play is an extremely challenging work whose theatrical concept is framed by a mash-up of emerging technology that will leave you with plenty of food for thought.”
– George Heymont, Huffington Post, November 10, 2012
